Vestibular rehabilitation is a widely unknown but important form of therapy. It is intended to target both the primary and secondary problems that vestibular disorders cause. It is basically an exercise program designed to lessen the problem of vertigo, gaze instability, dizziness, and/or imbalance and falls. Vestibular rehabilitation is a highly effective treatment for dizziness, vertigo, and balance problems.
Vestibular rehabilitation is used to treat issues with the vestibular system which consists of the organ in the inner ear. Even though you might have never heard of it, this system is responsible for our ability to perceive head movement, stay upright, and see clearly. Typically when our patients come to our office complaining of dizziness, ear infections, vertigo, blurry vision, etc. we know what the issue is. We assess into great lengths to ensure we are properly treating you.
Some of our assessments include having a discussion about the history and nature of your symptoms, evaluating your eye movements, testing for any motion sensitivity, evaluation of your balance, and more. Once all tests are complete, we can start our process.
We tend to see our patients for up to 8 weeks or more, and during that time we develop a personalized treatment plan for you. Some exercises you might learn during our time together that can help your vestibular system are:
Vision stability training
Posture training
Stretching and strengthening exercises
Balance training
Walking exercises
Neck mobility
Ergonomic training
General fitness exercises
Patients who get the most out of this type of therapy are usually those diagnosed with vertigo, Meniere's syndrome, or migraines, among many others. The goal of our treatment plan is to improve your ability to function in your day to day life again while also reducing your risk for falling, which ultimately improves your quality of life. Some other great benefits you will see and experience are:
A decrease in dizziness
Improved balance
Improved ability to stabilize your vision/gaze
Increased body strength
Return to prior level of movement/function
Improve your neck motion
