What to Expect when Getting a Massage from a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT)
If you need a therapeutic massage, you should know what to expect when visiting a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT). Massages are used for many reasons - from relieving muscle tension to improving circulation and healing wounds. The benefits of having a massage are wide-ranging, but the most common cause is pain relief. In case you want to know more about the benefits of receiving a professional massage therapy, read on!
We have put together a guide to help you get the most out of your massage experience.
1. Do Your Research Before Going In
It can be overwhelming when visiting a Massage Therapist for the first time. To make things easier for you, there are a few questions that we recommend asking a Massage Therapist beforehand.
- What is your Massage Therapy background?
- What are your qualifications?
- What are your areas of expertise?
- Do you have experience with my specific injury or condition?
2. Arrive on Time for Your Appointment
It's essential to arrive on time for your appointment, as Massage Therapists often book back-to-back appointments. If you are late, your Massage Therapist may have to reschedule your appointment.
3. Wear Loose Clothing
It's essential to wear loose clothing so that your Massage Therapist has easy access to the areas they need to work on. Massages can be pretty relaxing, so it's often best to wear something comfortable.
4. Be Proactive During Massage Therapy
You may feel a bit weird about moving your body around during Massage Therapy, but you mustn't lie entirely still. Massage Therapists can help with muscle tension and tightness by moving certain parts of the body, so be proactive! Massage Therapists are incredibly skilled at knowing where everything is without you telling them, so if they ask if everything is alright and you're not moving your body, then they'll know that something is wrong.
5. Tell Your Massage Therapist If You Uncomfortable
This is a two-way street. Massage Therapists can read your body language, so if something is uncomfortable, then they'll know. That being said, it's equally important that you tell your Massage Therapist what isn't working for you. If there is too much pressure or not enough of a certain kind of touch, then let them know! Massage Therapists want you to feel comfortable and relaxed, so they'll do everything in their power to accommodate your needs.
6. Preliminary Information
Answer some basic questions from your Massage Therapist to set a foundation. Some of these questions may include:
- It will help if you prepare for your massage by telling the therapist about any injuries or limitations. The goal of this initial conversation is to determine what type and amount of treatment will work best with both their qualifications and yours!
- After a thorough discussion of your physical condition, medical history, and lifestyle with the therapist, you may indicate how best they can provide treatment. It is always important that any medications being taken by those receiving massages are also discussed so there are no mix-ups or side effects!
This information is a great way to ensure that the massage therapist will provide you with sessions designed for your specific health and wellness goals.
7. Ensure Privacy
Make sure that there is privacy before and after your massage. Massages are often considered a personal experience, so be sure that you are not disturbed before or after your appointment.
- You'll be asked to remove your clothing before the massage so that you are comfortable.
- The massage therapist will leave the room while you get undressed. Take off only as much clothing that is comfortable for removal, but be sure to remove any articles of clothing before they can cause a mess in my studio!
- Lie on the massage table and cover yourself with a sheet or towel. This is where you'll be getting your treatment, so it's important not to forget any personal items like shoes!
- The massage chair is an exception to the rule because it lets you lean forward and supports your body's front half. You remain fully dressed while getting seated massages, typically lasting 10-30 minutes depending on how severe pain relief they're looking for in their clientele!
8. Massage Therapy Session
Massages can last from 30 minutes to an hour and a half, so Massage Therapists will often ask their clients how much time they have. You must be upfront about the amount of time you have so that your Massage Therapist can work within those constraints.
- Massage therapists use a variety of tools, like oils and lotions. If you're allergic to any one item, in particular, don't hesitate to tell your therapist beforehand so they can be aware!
- You must always let your massage therapist know if you're feeling uncomfortable. For hot stone massages, the temperature of stones can be quite different from person to person, so it may not feel great on some skins but is perfect for others!
- The massage therapist will rub your body with either the full-body or individual treatment depending on what you need. Let them know if there is any area of concern so they can focus on just those spots!
- Take some deep breaths to calm yourself, and then start reading.
- Table massages are great for those looking to relax, but it's not always easy. It usually only lasts about 30 minutes before the tension starts building again, and you need another session!
- The massage therapist will help you get comfortable and leave the room as they prepare for their appointment.
- It's best not to wear any perfume, cologne, lotion, or aftershave when you get a massage because they can irritate the Massage Therapist. You'll be told what clothes are most appropriate beforehand, so make sure to check with them if needed!
- Please remember that Massage Therapy is supposed to be relaxing, so always inform your Massage Therapist of any concerns you may have about your treatment.
9. Relax and Enjoy!
Massages are meant to be a relaxing experience, so try to let go of all your worries and stresses. Next close your eyes, breathe deeply, and enjoy the moment.
